Vikings end four-game skid, win three straight

By:
This past weekend, the Southland Vikings (4-4) took down the Rockford Foresters (3-7) twice as well as beat the Chicago Zephyrs (2-7) to regain a .500 record.

On Friday night, the Vikings’ bats were ready as they as they scored 10 runs off of 17 hits for a 10-5 victory. They were up 2-0 after the first inning and kept adding runs as the game continued. Their offense was fueled by Shane Brown, who went 3 for 5 with one run and one RBI, as well as Dan Eliopulos who also went 3 for 5 with one run. In fact, every batter for the Vikings recorded a hit.

While the Foresters did have 11 hits, they also left 10 on base and had four errors on defense. The Foresters did not score until the eighth inning as Vikings’ pitcher Harry Doherty went all nine innings, giving up four earned runs as well as striking out four. With that win, the Vikings ended their four-game losing streak.

On Saturday night, the Vikings’ offense once again took control of the game as they beat the Foresters again, 7-3. While it was only 2-1 going into the fifth inning, the Vikings added four runs in the inning, capped off by Brown’s 2-run double giving them a 6-1 lead.

The Vikings also received stellar pitching from Chris Chigas, Charlie Naso, and Jonathon Rosario. They gave up a combined 10 hits, one earned run and struck out 14. Rosario picked up the win.

To end the weekend, the Vikings faced off against the Chicago Zephyrs and, once again, the offense struck early with seven runs in the second inning. While no one player stood out in the game, seven players had one RBI as the team walked away with an 8-3 win.

Naso once again stepped up for the Vikings on the mound as he went eight innings, giving up three earned runs on nine hits while striking out four. With that win, the team was no longer under .500.

The Southland Vikings will be back in action Thursday night as they host the Illinois Lincolns at 7:10.
