Vikings Can't Quiet Corn Dog Bats; Fall 14-2

By: Brandon Januska

Hammond, Ind. – June 14, 2023 – The Southland Vikings had no answer for the offense of the Lake County Corn Dogs on Wednesday as they fell 14-2 at Dowling Park in seven innings.

The Corn Dogs scored in all but one inning to drop the Vikings to a losing record for the first time this season.

Much like the game on Monday when the Vikings hosted the Miracle, the Corn Dogs took advantage of a Vikings error in the first inning to get on the board first.

The Vikings trailed 2-0 before they ever came to the plate, but they were able to come back and tie the game back up after an RBI double from Hobbs Dunne in the first and Charlie Dumo scored on a wild pitch in the second.

That was all the Vikings could muster on offense while the Corn Dogs went on to score two runs each in the third, fourth and fifth innings, before breaking the game wide open with six runs in the sixth, capped off by a three-run homer by Ethan Nielsen.

“Errors don’t just affect that one play. It lingers on for the whole game,” Vikings manager Sullivan Stickann said after two more errors brought the team total up to 24 in 13 games. “Those mistakes just can’t happen early in games because it gives the other teams confidence and [the Corn Dogs] ran away with the confidence today and never looked back.”

The Vikings have now lost six of their last eight games after starting the year 4-1 and will look to get back to .500 on Thursday when they take on the Griffith Generals at Griffith High School. Jacob Cook is expected to start for the Vikings with first pitch at 7:10pm.
