Vikings Hot Offensive Start Powers Them To Win Over Giants

By: Cavan Malayter

Hammond, Ind – June 1, 2022.

The Southland Vikings (3-3) picked up their second win in a row following a defeat of the Chicago American Giants (0-3) by a score of 10-6. The Vikings reached double-digits in runs for the first time this season, highlighted by a four-run first inning.

Like Tuesday’s contest against the Panthers, the Vikings put up a crooked number in their first offensive frame with all four first-inning runs for the Vikings coming with two outs. With runners on first and second, Julio Treviño hit an RBI single. In the following at-bat, Nick Fies hit a single that would score a run due to an error made by the Giants catcher. That would be the first of four trips on base for Fies, who would later hit an RBI double in the third inning and a second double in the fifth inning.

“Get in the box, soak it in, then look for a fastball over the plate,” said Fies on his approach at the plate in Wednesday’s contest. “When I get my pitch, go after it and it was pretty simple today.”

While the Vikings were able to tack on an additional six runs throughout the following eight innings, the pitching staff played a prominent role in holding the lead given to them by the Viking offense.

Max Everaert made his second start with the Vikings this season, going four innings of shutout baseball with six strikeouts, and zero walks while allowing two hits.

“He was more confident today,” said Vikings assistant coach Scott Nowakowski on Everaert’s performance. “His fastball was moving it a bit and [he] was getting it over the plate.”

The Vikings will look to extend their winning streak to three games on Thursday when they’ll play host to the Crestwood Panthers at Dowling Park. The game is slated to start at 5 p.m. and will be aired on Facebook Live and the Vikings Radio Network.
