Vikings Rained Out to Begin Season

By: Jack Sheehan

After the long college season the Southland Vikings were set to begin their Midwest Collegiate League play this past Thursday, unfortunately mother nature had other plans.

With the recent rainstorms in the Flossmoor area where the teams home diamond is located the Vikings were forced to postpone the first four games of their season after rain continued to pour on Sunday.

Games against the Rockford Foresters, Chicago Zephyrs and two games against the Northwest Indiana Oilmen have been cancelled and moved to a later date. May 30th's game versus the Foresters has been moved to July 11th at 7 p.m. at Viking Field, June 1st's game against the Oilmen has been pushed back to June 17th at 7 p.m. on Southland's home diamond and June 2nd's rainout versus the Oilmen will now be played on July 15th at 7 p.m. at Viking Field on the campus of Homewood-Flossmoor Highschool.

This marks the first time in the teams history that the first four games of their season had to be called because of weather said the teams General Manager Don Popravak.

With weather permitting Southland will look to get their season underway this week with six games scheduled stretching to next Sunday.

With the Zephyr make up game set for Monday at 7 p.m. the Vikings also will face off with the Foresters at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m., the Oilmen on the road at 7 p.m. Thursday, the Michigan City Lakers on the road at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, they will then be on the road all weekend with a set of 2 p.m. games against the Zephyrs on Saturday and the Lexington Snipes on Sunday.
