Vikings come from behind to beat Oilmen, 8-7

By:

The Southland Vikings (6-9) trailed by one run in the ninth, but recovered thanks to an RBI single by Elliott Armstrong and an error by the Northwest Indiana Oilmen (14-4) as well as scored in the tenth to end their three game losing streak and earn their first win against the Oilmen.

The Vikings struck first after Alec Ornelas' RBI single in the second inning. But in the bottom half, the Oilmen tied it. In the third, RBI singles by Joey Migliaccio and Devin Pickett gave them a 3-1 lead.

But the Vikings would not score for a while after that as the Oilmen would score four more runs to lead 5-3. They took advantage of fielding errors as the Vikings ended with five of them. Chris Chigas, the Vikings' starting pitcher, went seven innings, giving up only three earned runs on six hits while striking out 10.

After the Vikings took the lead in the top of the ninth, the Oilmen tied it to send the game to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, the Vikings scored two runs, including an RBI double from Dan Eliopulos, to take an 8-6 lead. After giving up one run in the bottom half of the inning, the Vikings walked away with an 8-7 win.

They had a very balanced offensive attack, recording a total 13 hits from eight batters. Jonathon Rosario received the win as he pitched two innings, allowing one hit and one earned run as well as striking out two. Jim Tucker got the save.

This win ended the team's 3-game losing streak and was their first win against the Oilmen who had beaten the Vikings four straight times. They will be back in action Saturday night against the Illinois Lincolns.
