Vikings drop fourth game to Oilmen

By:
The Southland Vikings (4-6) stayed close with the Northwest Indiana Oilmen (10-3) but fell to them yet again, 9-4.

The game was scoreless through the first two innings until Devin Pickett’s RBI single gave the Vikings an early 1-0 lead in the third inning. But in the bottom half of the inning, the Oilmen scored two runs to retake the lead.

For the next three innings, the teams would battle back and forth until the seventh inning when the Oilmen created broke out with a three-run lead. After adding two more runs in the eighth, the Vikings were quickly vanquished in the ninth inning and dropped their second game in a row as well as their fourth loss to the Oilmen.

Interestingly, both starting pitchers had solid nights, but each left with no decision. The Oilmen’s Tyler Rauen went 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits along with three strikeouts. For the Vikings, Chris Chigas pitched five innings with only two earned runs on five hits. In fact, the major difference in the game was caused by errors as the Vikings committed five while the Oimen had two.

Jack Cinnoman ended up with the win while Shane Brown received the loss. The Vikings will be back in action Saturday night against the Illinois Lincolns at 6:10.
