Vikings defeat Liners, 9-2

A complete offensive attack as well as strong pitching led the Southland Vikings (15-18) past the DeKalb County Liners (21-14).

In the first inning, Dan Potempa singled to score Elliott Armstrong and make it 1-0. But in the fourth, a 2-run double by Tyler Hamby gave the Liners a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Dan Eliopulos homered to tie the game.

In the following inning, the Viking retook the lead with an RBI sacrifice fly from James Dawson and an RBI single by A.J. Doyle to make it 4-2.

The Vikings began to pull away in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double from Dawson as well as a 2-run single by Eliopulos who finished the game going 2 for 4 with one run scored and three RBIs.

In the eighth inning, Armstrong hit a 2-run home run to make it 9-2 Vikings. He also had a strong game, going 2 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. In fact, eight of the nine Viking batters recorded a base hit.

Harry Doherty (2-1) started the game for the Vikings but only lasted four innings as he left with a presumed injury. Evan Neitfeldt (2-2) went the rest of the way, allowing no earned runs on four hits while striking out three and picking up the win. Tanner Funke (3-4) received the loss.

The Vikings will end their 3-game homestand Wednesday night against the Will County CrackerJacks (22-13). In seven meetings, the CrackerJacks lead the series 4-3.
